Is textile and design very crowded because of fame and fortune?

So I was told by an art teacher that textile and design is very crowded because a lot of people want fame and fortune like De Vinci or Van Gogh had, but since these types of paintings take years to do a lot of people give up and go to textile and design. This is an area of art I was told is easy art, like the stuff Martha Stewart does. Since it's easier many people go this way hoping to gain their fame and fortune by doing easy art stuff. Therefore this end of art is extremely crowded.
